ASTHMA!
Asthma is a reversible lung disease afflicting approximately 22 million Americans. It may manifest in a variety of ways including any or all of the following symptons; Chest tightness, cough (dry or productive), wheezing and shortness of breath. Attacks may be precipitated by cold air, high humidity, smoke (tobacco or otherwise), odors, allergens and emotional upsets. A particular type of asthma is induced by exercise and may easily be avoided by pre-medicating prior to exercise. Safe and effective treatment is available and symptoms may be controlled entirely in most patients. The underlying problem is inflammation in the airways associated with narrowing and mucous production leading to symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs and bronchodialators are the mainstays of treatment. Leukotriene inhibitors block the action of inflammatory chemicals. Patients with esophageal reflux may have an increased sensitivity and control of acid may decrease asthma attacks. Some asthmatics are also sensitive to ASA which may precipitate symptoms. Sinus disease is also a frequent companion and precipitatory factor.
